The following is a letter template for how you can write to your MP in response to the government's plans to offshore asylum seekers in Rwanda, originally written by Rev. Richard Byass to his MP. Letter writing and expressing our views well to our representatives in parliament is a really good way of being pro-active about our faith as we seek to see justice and mercy shown in our world, and love for neighbour expressed. If you need to find your local MP's details, you can do so here: https://members.parliament.uk/members/commons Dear , I am not in the habit of writing to my parliamentary representative as I believe in representative selection and trust that our democracy should work. However believe that something is seriously amiss in our government. I find myself appalled and disappointed that the people who are entrusted to guide a nation - and who have historically sought to set an example to the developing world - could possibly advocate such an abhorrent policy. It will not work as a smokescreen to the earlier issue of the Prime Minister and Chancellor being fined for illegal activity during lockdown, and it is equally unacceptable that such inhumanity is being touted as being reasonable and rational. Furthermore, to release this at the point of one of the most significant religious festivals strikes me as being particularly inappropriate. The Presidency of the Methodist Church have released the following prayer and statement following the Prime Minister’s announcement. "The Government’s plans to offshore asylum seekers in Rwanda gives yet another insight into its hostile, uncompassionate and ineffective response to asylum seekers and refugees." "A Prayer for our lawmakers O God, who holds the nations in loving hands, we pray for British Parliamentarians as they hold the futures of asylum seekers and refugees in their hands. We pray O God, for new laws to be just and fair, to be compassionate and life enhancing. We pray for those who will debate, table amendments and vote on the Nationality and Borders Bill. May your love, O God, reign in their hearts. May they see beyond short term populism and grasp the common humanity that we all possess. May your Holy Spirit inspire us as we campaign against any government initiative which seeks to override the fact that we are all made in Your image. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen." Read the full statement here: http://ow.ly/puPk50IJU2L I implore you to stand against this outrageous proposal and to call for the entire scheme to be abolished. I look forward to hearing from you about this. I would hope to have at least an acknowledgment of receipt by the start of next week. Yours faithfully, Feel free to copy and paste the above into a letter and fill in your own details, or download an editable version via the button below for you to format with your own address, etc.
